Volunteer Role Descriptions
Clerk of Course (Lead)
Keeps things organized behind the blocks. Uses the heat sheet to organize which lanes the swimmers are assigned. Clerk of course is always a few heats ahead of the meet so the swimmers are ready to step up to the blocks. It is best to sign up as an assistant clerk unless you have already done this job in a previous season.
Clerk of Course (Assistant)
Helps the Head Clerk locate kids and make sure they are at the designated area on time. Helps organize both teams' swimmers so they are ready for their events.
Computer Scorer (Lead)
This role is for HOME meets. This person enters swimmers' times into the computer from the runner. The visiting team will have a person reading out the times. This job requires prior experience with the software.
Computer Scorer (Assistant)
This role is for AWAY meets. This person will read the times given to them by the runner to the Home team's scorer who will enter them into the computer.
Concession Assistant
This role is for HOME meets. This person helps at the Concession stand. You will take money and provide change for items purchased. This year there will be NO CHILDREN allowed behind the stand. Please only sign up for this job if you do not need to have your children with you.
Hospitality
This role is for HOME meets. This person will arrive early and place cones around the Walsham Drive cul-de-sac located in front of the pool gates to keep this area open for emergency vehicles and general safety. You will roll a cooler of water to the volunteers near the middle of each shift. You will need to remove the cones at the conclusion of the meet.
Ribbon Writer
This person attaches stickers to ribbons for all events throughout the meet. You will file them for both teams when it is a home meet.
Runner
This role is for HOME meets. This person simply takes the heat sheets from timers and “runs” them over to the scorers’ table for tabulation. Also responsible for collecting DQ sheets from stroke judges and delivering them to the scorer.
Starter
This role is for HOME meets. This person announces the event number, name of the event, age group and distance prior to beginning each heat. This person will also need to speak to the crowd throughout the meet recognizing sponsors and making any additional announcements. Uses an air horn or bullhorn to sound off the start and is responsible for noticing a “false start.”
Starter (Assistant)
This role is for HOME meets. Assists the starter with event number, name of event, age group and distance. Communicates changes to Clerk of Course. Helps the starter run a smooth meet.
Stroke and Turn Judge
Determines proper execution of swim strokes in addition to turns at the ends of the pool & relay starts. Be aware of the two-hand touch for both breaststroke and butterfly. TRAINING IS REQUIRED
Head Timer
This role is for HOME meets. In charge of letting the Starter know that all timers are ready to go. In control of two stopwatches that are both started at the sound of the starter’s horn. If a timer has a problem with their stopwatch, they will raise their arm to alert you that they need your watch. You walk over and trade stopwatches.
Timer
This person is responsible for a swimmer's time in their lane. Start time at horn & stop when swimmer TOUCHES the wall. For Breast and Butterfly, the swimmer must touch with TWO hands before you stop your watch. Record your time & opponent timer's time on heat sheet. We ask that Timers stay alert and do not use cell phones while they are on shift.
